Redwood Materials is building a cutting-edge facility aimed at revolutionizing battery recycling. This milestone project will pave the way for a sustainable lithium-ion supply chain while creating an estimated 1,500 jobs. The project is the largest economic development in South Carolina’s history and our geotechnical expertise is helping Redwood Materials overcome the challenging terrain with our specialized materials expertise, local knowledge, and proven partnership approach.
The Challenge
The construction site, situated in the South Carolina lowcountry, presents unique challenges. Poor soil quality and consistently wet conditions require innovative engineering to establish stable foundations, while ensuring re-use of the site’s marginal soils as fill is critical to managing costs and limiting environmental disturbances. A project of this scale also requires aligning multiple stakeholders and meeting exacting engineering standards. All while maintaining the pace of ongoing construction.

The Solution
Drawing on our extensive experience of working on projects in the Lowcountry, our geotechnical team conducted extensive soil testing and analyses. This helps us offer creative solutions for reusing marginal soils to minimize material import costs. We also performed meticulous Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments to ensure regulatory compliance and safe land use. Our construction materials testing services continue to verify the quality of every element, from soil compaction to concrete installation.
